The all-new Polo GTI is the fastest Polo Volkswagen has ever made. More shared DNA from the Golf GTI means its performance is more closely matched this time.
It may appear to be a scaled down version of its Golf brother, but it is more devoted to the original GTI's ethos than its larger sibling.
It uses a 1.4-litre TSI turbo- and supercharged engine producing 178bhp - not too far off the Golf GTI. VW's XDS differential receives power from a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allowing the GTI to reach to 60 in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 163 mph.
A twin-clutch DSG automatic transmission with seven speeds is standard. And despite its punch, it's capable of 47mpg combined and only puts out 139g/km of CO2.
Like the bigger Golf, the front-wheel drive Polo comes standard with VW's 'XDS' system, which aids cornering by braking the inside wheel when it detects slip, pulling the car around corners neatly.
Visual changes include a body kit and alloys linked closely to the Golf GTI, and the trademark parallel red lines running across the honeycomb front grille. The ride is lowered and the car sits on firmer, sports suspension.
