The Audi A6 Media Event

BY Krado Low

We burn some rubber in the seventh-generation A6 at Changi.

We were presented the chance to be able to experience and assess the Audi A6's new dynamic abilities through a series of specially-designed exercises. A quick recap: Azfar drove the A6 around the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi earlier.

I started off with the “wet circuit”, which turned out to be bone dry. Nevertheless, the course was designed with a fast lane switch, a couple of gates, a long sweeper and finally a slalom.

The idea was to hurl the new 3.0-litre A6 with quattro all-wheel drive into the lane switch at nearly 100km/h and executing a sudden lane change. Potential A6 buyers can expect a lot of grip, but when it runs out, very predictable understeer as the traction control dials down the power as soon as it detects slip from the front wheels.

The amount of body roll is pretty spot on for a car of its size. It does get a little unsettled with overly enthusiastic driving, with the rear stepping out slightly. A gentle lift off and counter-steer was all it needed to get out of serious trouble.

The next station was a simple slalom course, but with three A6's, one being the outgoing model. The idea was to demonstrate the advantages of the new A6's crash diet which Audi claims to remove up to 80 kg of unwanted fat.

80kg may not seem like much, but the new A6 can hold the line tighter than the outgoing A6. As a result, the traction control kicks in much later and it was much more manageable at higher speeds.

20% of the new Audi A6’s body shell (visibly, the doors, boot lid and the bonnet), along with several chassis components which include the suspension mounts and links are made from aluminium. More high-tech toys can be found in the interior, with MMI navigation plus system with MMI touch, a really cool park assist, lane assist and the Audi pre sense safety system.

Now factor in the price: The new Audi A6 is now available in Singapore at S$237,038 for the 2.8 FSI multitronic model and S$307,038 for the 3.0 TFSI quattro. That puts it right in between its main rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Reinhold Carl, Managing Director of Audi Singapore said, “the new Audi A6 is a key model in our 2011 growth strategy. Beautifully designed and packed with class-leading technology, this latest Audi A6 is set to be a game-changer in the executive sedan segment in Singapore.”
