Aston Martin Unveils The Virage

Aston Martin began its extensive and ongoing competitive PLM technology evaluation two years ago. The decision to migrate from its current technology to NX and Teamcenter is critical to its mission of continuing to produce some of the world’s greatest sports cars.

For the Hexis Aston No. 9 it was a dominant weekend on the magnificent Potrero de los Funes. Having won the Qualifying Race, they eclipsed the field by over 15 seconds at the flag, scoring more team points in one weekend than any of the previous nine of the FIA GT1 World Championship.

Double Joy for Aston Martin and Hexis!


It was Tomas Enge who held the lead from pole position as the 22 car grid thundered along the main straight into the first corner. Everyone made it around the Senna S with Peter Dumbreck in the No. 23 Sumo Power Nissan GT-R holding onto the rear of the leading Aston Martin, while Clivio Piccione in the No. 10 Hexis Aston Martin was being pressurised by the No. 2 Vitaphone Maserati of Enrique Bernoldi, with the Brazilian sweeping into third place on lap 2. Starting from the back of the grid, the No. 5 Matech Ford of Richard Westbrook was on the move early on, moving up four places in the first three laps and a further three places by lap 9 in his attempt to get ahead of the No. 1 Vitaphone Maserati of Andrea Bertolini. Bertolini was holding a points scoring position in ninth place, which became 10th when he was passed by the Triple H Team Hegersport Maserati of Daniel Serra.

Ricardo Zonta had a great start as the lights went green for the Championship Race but it was Jamie Campbell-Walter who broke through the ranks to clinch second. Behind them, things went horribly wrong for a lot of cars and after the mayhem had subsided, the SRT Nissans and Triple H Maserati were the main victims of the carnage.

Amongst the Laguna range of vehicles in the Renault stable, the Coupe is definitely the most stylish, as compared to its hatchback and sedan siblings. Though many (usually the automotive purists) may scoff at its attempt at being a pseudo Aston Martin, those in general would probably appreciate and fall in love with the car, which means a job well done for the designer. But has the designer done much then? There is a saying that goes along the lines of 'Less is more', and for the Laguna Coupe, Renault has managed to achieve that with its clean lines.
