With the kick-off of the event in Asia on the 8th of July 2010, the Shell Eco-marathon has finally achieved the status of being a truly global event for the first time with 80 per cent of the teams making it on to the track for the inaugural Shell Eco-marathon ASIA 2010 which is comparable to teams who participate in Europe and the United States. This competition has been running in Europe since 1985 and the United States since 2007 and the objective of the competition is to challenge students to design, build and drive a vehicle that can travel the furthest distance on the least amount of fuel.

Shell Eco-marathon ASIA 2010 - Sepang

Held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, teams from Thailand and Singapore emerged tops amongst 81 teams from 10 Asian countries.


The track was designed by the world-renowned Hermann Tilke, and incorporates local elements such as the roof of the main grandstand which resembles the eaves of traditional Korean ‘hanok’ houses. A total of 130,000 spectators will be accommodated at the circuit, with 16,000 seats in the main grandstand. The addition of the 2010 FORMULA 1 KOREAN GRAND PRIX to the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is expected to represent a watershed for development of the motor sports industry in Korea, as well as bring economic benefits to the area.

Korea International Circuit On Track for Summer Completion

Construction of the Korea International Circuit, set to host the 2010 FORMULA 1 KOREAN GRAND PRIX from October 22-24, is on schedule for completion this summer.


This year's S1K was won by Team Ultra Racing - Kegani in a 1600cc Toyota Levin machine as it sensationally upstaged the higher powered 1800cc cars from the team's more illustrious opponents such as Type R Racing Team, JC Racing, Mofaz Racing and Pentagon J’s Racing from Class 1, proving that brute force is not everything in an endurance race. Driven by Kenny Lee, Chris O’Shannessy and Hsiao Tung Wei, the Class 2 trio took eight hours 32 minutes and 1.455 seconds to complete a gruelling 181 laps of the 5.543 kilometres Sepang International Circuit.

A spin-off event from the Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race, the S1K Endurance Race was back for its second edition.


Next was the slalom course in the mid-engined Boxster S. Each driver was timed and the winner walked away with a prize at the end of the day.

Guided by professional driving instructors, 'The Mercedes-Benz Driving Experience' provided participants with an exclusive opportunity to drive an almost complete range of Mercedes-Benz models.


The teams are from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) West, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Shell Eco-Marathon 2010

Making its debut in Asia in July 2010, the Shell Eco-Marathon is an educational project that challenges student teams to design and build the most energy-efficient vehicles to compete with each other.


Apart from showcasing the two new MINIs, visitors to MINIFESTO 2010 also had the opportunity to participate in activities like a miniature 'gymkhana circuit' Driving Challenge, remote controlled car challenge, go karting as well as seeing the legendary MINI rally champion Rauno Aaltonen perform in a MINI which he did with gusto on the handling course demo runs despite his age.
