The 1.8 TFSI aside, what we have here today is the ‘entry-level’ variant: the 1.4 TFSI. Yes it shares the same powerplant as the Golf, but somewhat this one feels - and I swear it isn’t psychological - smoother. And of course, this is a good thing (and expected), considering the almost $44,000 (equivalent to a five year old, highly-spec’d Fiat Bravo T-Jet, egad!) separating the two. Hmm… You can’t help but wonder whether that significant difference in price between the two is justified – after all, the Golf and this new A3 is, technically, the same car.

All this is the result of an engine rigorously designed for low load-change and flow losses; the high-revving four-liter powerplant develops power quickly and instantenously. Two twin-scroll turbochargers produce up to 1.2 bars of boost pressure also contributes to the dynamic character of the twin-turbo V8. Flaps in the exhaust can be opened for a rawer sound. The Audi RS7 Sportback uses just 9.8 liters of fuel per 100 km with the performance to match!

Audi also offers the same engine that powers the two TT RS models in the RS 3 Sportback – due to arrive in Singapore next quarter. It takes 4.6 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h – a best-in-class performance figure. Its governed top speed is 250 km/h. Audi Singapore has been receiving orders for the car even before its launch. This is the seventh category win in a row at the International Engine of the Year Awards for Audi TFSI technology and the second year in a row that the Audi 2.5 litre TFSI has won the award. Renowned design experts such as James Kelly, who heads the Transportation Design department at Pforzheim University, expressed high praise for the coupé. “The design of the Audi A7 Sportback was the best in the group by far,” Kelly said. “The low tail section is especially impressive! I’d buy it immediately.” Othmar Wickenheiser, professor of Transportation Design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, also praised the car’s styling: “An absolutely harmonious design concept. Unembellished flanks, sinewy shoulders, streamlined sides – perfect.”
