Valentino Rossi certainly needs no introduction. He is a nine-time motorcycle world champion, and is one of the most successful motorcycle riders of all time and has a whole roster of records to his name. His successes on the racetrack and his personality have quite rightly made him a living legend. Some may not know this, but Rossi has also proved that he is an excellent driver too. He has since shown that car racing has become his second motorsport home. Now, swapping his two wheels for four, he will be joining the BMW M Works driver roster for their 2023 season.

To continue its run of success in the internationally established GT4 category, BMW M Motorsport has released the new BMW M4 GT4.


Ok, so it isn’t a full-fat M car like the M3 or M5, but rather a warmed-over M Performance model, like the M340i and M440i. Hence the double digit number in the M badge, and the demure bodywork. Still, with the ease with which electric drivetrains develop power, the i4 M50 is the brawniest model in the 3/4 Series range… For a very short while at least. One of its driving modes is called Sport Boost, which unlocks the car’s full 400kW/544hp and 795Nm of torque for up to 10 seconds at a time, a fair bit more than the M3 and M4 Competition’s 510hp and 650Nm. Otherwise, the i4 M50 normally puts out 350kW/476hp, and 730Nm.

They’re neither the cheapest nor the most advanced BMW models, but the new 2 Series compact MPV and coupe are vital for the brand. Here’s why.


Factor in the current COE price of $82k and the M340i comes within striking distance of the $376,581 Audi S4, also an all-wheel drive 3-litre turbocharged sport sedan that makes 353hp and 500Nm of torque. Altogether, that’s good for an electronically-limited 250km/h top speed and 4.7 second sprint from 0-100km/h. Compelling? Moreover, even though it still sports a straight-6 turbo engine, the M340i is now available in Singapore only with all-wheel drive, or xDrive as BMW calls it. Cue moans and groans from hardcore BMW enthusiasts. Since the regular G20 has already been covered in a previous article, we’ll simply focus on what makes this an M Performance vehicle. With the M DCT ‘box, the M2 Competition completes a standard standstill to 100 km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds with a 6-speed manual) - not that far off the Porsche 911 Carrera S (PDK) which needs 3.9 seconds, just for comparison’s sake. Top speed has been electronically limited to 250 km/h; but surprise, surprise, the car can be combined with the M Driver’s Package to raise the top speed to 280 km/h.

The century sprint takes just 3.4 seconds, all the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250kmh. With the optional M Driver’s Package, however, the fun continues till the speedometer touches 305kmh.

New M5 offers greater everyday practicality with the debut of xDrive on the platform


The BMW M5 Competition Edition uses an even more powerful version of the twin-turbo V8 found in the standard BMW M5. While retaining the M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, Valvetronic variable valve control and the cross-bank exhaust manifold of the standard car, the Competition Edition runs more boost courtesy of a recalibrated ECU. Maximum power is up from 560 hp to 600 hp, with the peak torque of the V8 rising from 680 Nm to 700 Nm. As a result, the M5 Competition Edition can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, compared to 4.4 seconds for the standard car. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. BMW’s seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including engine Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration comes standard.Improved handling comes courtesy of stiffer responses from the springs and electronically controlled dampers, along with thicker anti-roll bars. The Active M electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip differential, which intervenes rapidly and precisely at an early stage to control wheelspin and keep the car stable, is recalibrated for an even more sporty response. Once again, there are three Drive Control settings to choose from: Comfort for normal road use, Sport when a more dynamic driving style is preferred and Sport Plus for the most extreme driving, such as on a race track. Six-piston caliper brakes are mounted within the 20-inch M Double-spoke 601M light alloy wheels.

First impressions of the GS F can be polarizing, with the sharp lines of standard GS enhanced by a gaping front maw with a mesh grille and vented fenders flowing into swooping side skirts, as well as a diffuser, quad pipes and a carbon-fiber lip spoiler out back. The front and rear light clusters have also been redesigned. While some may find it overkill, this writer finds the enhancements well suited to the GS shape, adding a good dose of presence.
