Formula 1 2024 Dutch Grand Prix Recap

BY Sean Loo

Lando Norris clinched a thrilling victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, snatching the win from Max Verstappen in front of his home crowd at Zandvoort.

Norris showed why he’s a force to be reckoned with, reclaiming the lead after Verstappen’s early surge and denying the Dutchman what would have been his fourth consecutive win on home soil.

Starting from pole, Norris had high hopes of leading the race from the get-go. But Verstappen, ever the aggressive starter, got the jump at turn one, leaving Norris to chase down the Red Bull star.

For a moment, it looked like Verstappen would run away with it, breaking free of the DRS range and pulling ahead.

As the race wore on, Verstappen struggled with grip during the middle stint. The McLaren driver closed the gap, and in a brilliant display of racecraft, reclaimed the lead and never looked back.

By the time the checkered flag waved, Norris had stretched his advantage to a whopping 20 seconds, adding this win to his earlier triumph in Miami and trimming Verstappen’s championship lead.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc climbed from sixth to third to claim the final spot on the podium; a much-needed result for Ferrari after a challenging weekend. Oscar Piastri, Norris’s McLaren teammate, had to settle for fourth after an extended first stint saw him lose track position.

Ferrari’s fortunes improved with Carlos Sainz’s charge to fifth, just ahead of Sergio Perez’s Red Bull. The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton followed, both opting for late second stops to switch to soft tyres in a bid for the fastest lap. A gamble that didn’t quite pay off.

Pierre Gasly brought some cheer to Alpine, finishing ninth on Oliver Oakes’s debut weekend as team boss. Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten for Aston Martin, edging out Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg in the final laps.

As for the fastest lap? It seemed like it was destined for one of the Mercedes boys on fresh softs, but it was Norris who ultimately secured the bonus point, cutting Verstappen’s championship lead from 78 points to 70 with nine rounds still to go.

The title fight is far from over it seems.
