Some tyre characteristics you can measure with numbers. Braking distances, lateral G, lap times and tread wear can all be quantified.

Then there is the part you feel through your hands, backside and right foot.

Earlier this year, I travelled to Thailand to experience the new Bridgestone POTENZA Adrenalin RE005 at the Thai Bridgestone Proving Ground, ahead of its arrival in Singapore this September.

The RE005 succeeds the familiar POTENZA Adrenalin RE004. It continues Bridgestone’s philosophy of making a performance tyre that remains fully usable on everyday roads.

Bridgestone describes the Adrenalin series as being developed around the concept of “Maximising Driving Pleasure”. The RE005 represents the latest evolution of that approach.

And after a day of putting the tyre through its paces, the biggest takeaway was how broad its abilities are.

I’ll admit to having a bit of history with Bridgestone tyres too. I ran the legendary POTENZA RE-01R on my Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, and over the years I’ve also used POTENZA Sport and various TURANZA tyres on several of my cars.

I’ve always liked the way Bridgestone balances outright performance with the sort of predictability and confidence you want from a road tyre. So when the opportunity came to put the new RE005 through its paces at Bridgestone’s own proving ground, I was particularly keen to see where the latest Adrenalin sat within that lineage.

Dry grip: GR86 + circuit = a good day at work

For the dry handling portion, we were handed the keys to a Toyota GR86, which is just about the perfect car for evaluating a tyre like this.

Rear-wheel drive, naturally communicative and sufficiently powerful to expose weaknesses in a tyre without overwhelming it.

We ran laps around Bridgestone’s proving-ground circuit, including back-to-back comparisons against performance tyres from two competing brands.

The RE005 was impressive from the outset.

Turn-in was sharp and immediate, with plenty of confidence from the front axle. Through longer corners, the tyre settled quickly into the load and maintained its grip without feeling nervous.

It was especially enjoyable through repeated changes of direction. The GR86 stayed composed and predictable, and communication was good as the tyres approached their limits.

Bridgestone says the RE005 delivers an 8 per cent improvement in dry grip over the RE004, based on its own test-driver evaluations. using wider blocks to distribute pressure across the contact patch, together with connecting blocks designed to improve cornering stability. Its distinctive A-shaped groove and wider inner rib are also intended to sharpen steering response.

Obviously, our sessions were not an instrumented laboratory test, so I’m not going to claim we independently verified that 8 per cent figure.

What I can say is that the RE005 felt very good indeed.

We also put the RE005 through a circuit and slalom course in a Tesla Model 3, which gave us a useful sense of how the tyre copes with the extra weight and instant torque associated with EVs.

The car changed direction cleanly and stayed well composed through the cones, with the tyres delivering good bite up front and a reassuring sense of stability as the weight shifted side to side. It was a good demonstration that the RE005 is not just aimed at traditional performance cars, with Bridgestone positioning it for a broad range of vehicles including EVs.

The wet test was even more impressive

The bigger surprise came when Bridgestone moved us onto its wet-testing facilities.

This time we were driving a BMW 3 Series, giving us a heavier, more representative executive saloon through which to judge wet stability, braking, and aquaplaning resistance.

That is where the RE005 made perhaps its strongest case.

Driving through heavily waterlogged sections of the proving ground, the tyre maintained impressive composure.

There was remarkably little sensation of the steering being tugged or pulled by standing water, and very little momentary loss of directional stability.

That stability matters because aquaplaning can be particularly unsettling when it suddenly unloads the steering wheel. The RE005 gave very little of that sensation during our runs.

Its wet braking performance was equally impressive. Under hard braking, the BMW remained stable and stopped with a level of confidence that felt slightly at odds with just how much water was underneath us.

Bridgestone quotes a 10 per cent improvement in wet grip over the RE004 under its own testing methodology. The RE005 incorporates what the company calls a Rain Pulse Groove, designed to evacuate water more effectively and reduce the likelihood of hydroplaning, together with a revised compound intended to improve wet grip and response.

Again, I cannot independently validate the percentage.

The improvement in wet-weather confidence, however, was something we could genuinely feel from behind the wheel.

A performance tyre designed for everyday driving

Perhaps that is the most interesting thing about the RE005.

This is clearly a performance tyre. Put it on something like a GR86, and it offers enough grip, steering response, and stability to make an enthusiastic Sunday-morning drive genuinely entertaining.

Yet its development hasn’t concentrated solely on lap-time heroics.

Bridgestone has also worked on rolling resistance and tyre life. The revised compound is claimed to reduce rolling resistance, while a Multi-Round Block design manages contact pressure around the shoulder to improve tread longevity and maintain more consistent performance as the tyre wears.

Bridgestone is positioning the RE005 for everything from compact cars and saloons to sports cars, high-performance models and EVs, with sizes ranging from 14 to 20 inches across selected Asia-Pacific markets.

That breadth makes sense.

For Singapore drivers in particular, wet-weather behaviour arguably matters as much as outright dry grip. We might enjoy a spirited drive whenever the opportunity presents itself, but our tyres spend considerably more time negotiating expressways, sudden tropical downpours and everyday commuting.

A performance tyre that manages all of those situations convincingly is far easier to recommend.

Day two of the Pirelli launch brought us to the Sepang International Circuit, the perfect proving ground for the new P ZERO range. After the smooth, quiet, and confidence-inspiring road experience in Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands, it was time to push the tyres to their limits on the track.

Porsche Taycan Turbo on P ZERO R

The day began with the Porsche Taycan Turbo on P ZERO R tyres. From the first turn, it was evident these tyres were built for speed and precision. The Taycan’s acceleration was explosive, its brakes sharp and responsive. Over two laps, we explored the limits of grip and handling, and the tyres delivered on every front.

Despite the aggressive cornering and heavy acceleration, the ride remained composed, quiet, and surprisingly comfortable. It was a clear demonstration of how the P ZERO R balances extreme performance with usability—a tyre capable of supercar-level demands without compromising on refinement.

Mercedes-AMG A45 S on P ZERO (PZ5)

Next, we moved to the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, a compact but fiery performer, fitted with the standard P ZERO. Around Sepang’s fast corners and sweeping bends, the tyre provided the grip and predictability necessary to exploit the car’s full potential. The experience highlighted the versatility of the P ZERO range: while the P ZERO R caters to supercars and high-performance EVs, the standard P ZERO is ready for most performance-oriented road cars, providing confidence and control even at high speeds.

Lotus Emira on P ZERO Trofeo RS

For the ultimate track experience, we rode shotgun in the Lotus Emira on P ZERO Trofeo RS tyres. These semi-slicks are designed for dry conditions and track-focused driving. With specialised compounds and construction, the Trofeo RS delivers phenomenal grip, cornering precision, and lap performance. During earlier timing, the Lotus clocked 2 minutes 27 seconds per lap, and being in the front seat with a former Super Taikyu and BTCC driver was exhilarating. Every turn and braking zone showcased how a tyre built for racing translates to real-world feedback, responsiveness, and driver confidence.

RunForward™ Technology in Real Life

Pirelli also offered a practical demonstration of RunForward™ technology on a fleet of Tesla models. We drove on a small circuit first with fully inflated tyres, then repeated with one rear tyre deflated to below 10 PSI. The cars performed as if nothing had changed. This confirmed that RunForward™ provides not just theoretical safety but tangible, real-world reliability in a puncture scenario—a feature that delivers peace of mind for both daily drivers and high-performance EV owners.

Seal Inside™ Technology

Another innovation showcased was Seal Inside™ technology for the Cinturato Rosso. This system automatically seals punctures caused by nails or small debris, allowing the car to continue driving without losing pressure. It’s an elegant solution for urban drivers who want a safe, hassle-free experience without sacrificing performance or safety.

Cyber™ Tyre: A Glimpse into the Future

Perhaps the most forward-looking technology we saw was the Cyber™ Tyre. Embedded sensors transmit real-time data to the car, monitoring temperature, speed, and rotation. This allows vehicles to optimise braking, handling, and acceleration at the limit. Already available on select McLaren models and set to roll out on Pagani later this year, Cyber™ Tyre illustrates Pirelli’s commitment to intelligent, connected tyres, bridging the gap between performance and data-driven safety.

Observations and Reflections on the P ZERO 5

Experiencing the P ZERO range on road and track reinforced how much thought and engineering go into these tyres. Each variant, P ZERO E, P ZERO, P ZERO R, and Trofeo RS, has a clear purpose, whether it’s delivering supercar-level performance, high-performance road car versatility, or semi-slick track dominance. Comfort, noise levels, grip, and safety innovations were consistent across all models, proving that Pirelli is not just chasing speed but delivering an overall driving experience.

Their focus remains firmly in the premium segment, backed by involvement at the highest levels of motorsport, from Formula One to MotoGP. The combination of cutting-edge compounds, smart technologies like RunForward™ and Cyber™ Tyre, and track-proven performance shows that Pirelli is setting the benchmark for what a modern, premium tyre should be.

Final Thoughts

This driving experience made it clear: Pirelli has crafted a tyre range that leaves nothing to chance. The P ZERO family is versatile, technologically advanced, and uncompromising in performance. The EQS 500, with its smooth power delivery and precise handling, felt completely at home on the P ZERO E tyres. Even on tight bends and challenging corners, the tyres held perfectly, providing confidence-inspiring grip. What stood out most, however, was how quiet and comfortable the tyres were, even over rough patches and larger potholes.

Later, we switched to a Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e, and the P ZERO E continued to impress. The SUV’s fast-sweeping bends along the Karak Highway were handled with ease, proving the tyres’ versatility across different vehicle types.

Performance and Innovation

The P ZERO E wasn’t built to just be a sustainable product; it’s very much about performance as well. The tyre has achieved a remarkable triple-A rating across all sizes in the European tyre label system, the highest possible score for rolling resistance, wet braking, and external noise. This results in improved efficiency, shorter stopping distances, and a quieter ride.

A standout feature is the RunForward™ technology, which allows the tyre to continue functioning for up to 40 km at reduced speeds after a puncture. This innovation provides peace of mind, especially for EV owners who often lack a spare tyre due to space constraints.

Moreover, the P ZERO E incorporates over 55% bio-based and recycled materials, making it the first ultra-high-performance tyre to achieve this. This includes natural rubber, rice husks, and bio-resins, all of which are certified by Bureau Veritas to ISO 14021 standards.

Sustainability Without Compromise

Pirelli’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the P ZERO E. The use of sustainable materials doesn’t come at the expense of performance. In fact, the tyre’s design and materials contribute to its low rolling resistance, enhancing the range of electric vehicles. Additionally, the tyre’s construction reduces CO₂ emissions by 24% compared to previous generations.

The P ZERO E also features the new Pirelli sustainability logo, indicating tyres made with at least 50% natural and recycled materials. This logo serves as a clear marker for consumers prioritising eco-friendly products.

The Road Ahead

Driving the P ZERO E left a lasting impression. It strikes a balance between performance, comfort, and sustainability, delivering an experience that feels effortless and premium. It grips when you want it to, absorbs imperfections silently, and gives peace of mind with RunForward™ technology.

Every great motorsport weekend starts with a good drive, and for our trip up to Sepang for the Super GT race, we needed something that could keep up with both the distance and the demands of a packed weekend. Enter the Nissan Serena from Avis Singapore, a surprisingly perfect road trip companion.

Avis, our go-to choice

We are no strangers to Avis, having rented from them before, and each time, the experience keeps us coming back. The Havelock Road pick-up point is centrally located, and the handover was as seamless as ever. Quick, efficient and friendly – just what you want when you’re eager to hit the road.

This time, the Serena was our ride of choice, and it proved to be more than just a practical MPV. With four adults on board, plus a boot full of camera equipment, luggage and race weekend essentials, it still had space to spare. The interior is cavernous, with generous legroom and headroom, and cleverly designed storage compartments, trays, and buddy holes kept our road trip snacks, drinks and gear perfectly organised. No clutter, no chaos.

A Nissan Serena USP

One of the standout features that made loading and unloading especially convenient was the Serena’s dual-backdoor tailgate. It offers two ways to access the cargo area – a full-height tailgate for larger items, or a nifty rear windscreen hatch that opens independently. The smaller glass opening was convenient when parked in tight spaces or when we just needed to reach for a camera bag or snacks without opening the whole boot.

Driving the Serena felt more like gliding, thanks to its e-POWER hybrid system. It delivers an EV-like smoothness – quiet, refined and composed. The long highway stretches leading up to Sepang were tackled with ease, and the fuel economy impressed us, too. We averaged about 16 km/L, which is commendable for an MPV and not far off the official 17.5 km/L figure. That meant fewer fuel stops and more time soaking up the atmosphere in the race paddock.

Small features, big impact

A handy touch that came in particularly useful during petrol station dashes was the Capless Fuel Filler. There was no need to fiddle with a dirty fuel cap; simply plug in and pump. It’s a minor feature, but one that makes a noticeable difference.

Inside, the touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay was our command centre. Whether it was navigating to our hotel, playing race-day playlists or checking messages en route to the circuit, everything worked smoothly. Rear passengers also appreciated the charging outlets, which kept phones and cameras powered throughout the weekend. And with the built-in in-car camera system, we had extra peace of mind leaving the car parked while we were trackside enjoying the action.

Exceeding expectations

As far as support vehicles for a motorsport weekend go, the Serena exceeded expectations. It may not have been the loudest or fastest vehicle around Sepang that weekend, but it was certainly one of the most comfortable and capable.

With self-service kiosks coming soon to Avis Singapore, renting will become even more convenient. It is great to see a brand continually improving the customer journey with thoughtful technology.

Whether it is a family trip up north or a weekend to watch the races, the Nissan Serena from Avis Singapore delivered in every way. Fuss-free, practical and surprisingly refined, it’s the kind of car that lets you enjoy the drive as much as the destination.
