Brendan Mok’s automotive journey didn’t begin in a boardroom or a dealership—it began in the margins of his school notebooks, filled with sketches of cars. Today, as Head of PR & Communications at Porsche Asia Pacific, he’s living a dream that was fuelled by passion, forged through persistence, and sharpened by experience across some of the world’s most iconic car brands.

In this feature, Brendan shares the cars that left a mark on him, the turning points of his career, and why he’s held onto his 997 GT3 for nearly a decade—despite the sore left leg from city traffic. From rotary-powered nostalgia to a love letter to hydraulic steering, this is a story of taste, timing, and the thrill of finding the right car at the right time.

What are some previous cars you’ve owned that you still miss?

I miss the almost instinctive balance of the S14 Silvia—the steering and rear axle felt alive, as though the car already knew what you were going to do before you did. I also miss the creamy-smooth power delivery of the rotary-powered RX-7 and the silky straight-sixes of old BMWs that rev and sing in harmony. I had a short but memorable stint with a Megane RS—an amazing car, just let down by some reliability issues.

But the car I miss most? That would be my AP2 Honda S2000. From the backstory of the S2K, its bulletproof reliability, and pop culture cred (thanks, Johnny Tran), to its sublime chassis, rifle bolt-like gearchange, and that screaming, old-school VTEC engine—it was a proper driver’s car. I only wish I had been older and wiser when I owned it, because I definitely did a few silly things to mine.

How did you get into the car industry? Was it always the plan, or did passion turn into profession?

I’ve loved cars for as long as I can remember. I was the kid doodling them in textbooks when I should’ve been paying attention in class.

When law or med school didn’t work out (sorry Mum), I took a shot at automotive journalism to combine my love for cars and writing. I did stints at local tuning magazines before trying to start my own publication, AFTMKT. We managed 20 issues before calling it a day. With that portfolio in hand, I started knocking on doors at Leng Kee.

That persistence led to a role at Audi Singapore, which opened the door to a position at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. That eventually took me to a corporate comms role with BMW and MINI in Melbourne, and now to where I am today—living the dream at Porsche Asia Pacific.

Choosing the Current Ride

Why did you choose your current car? Did your job influence your choice in any way?

I chose the 997-generation 911 GT3 because it hits the sweet spot between modern amenities and pure analogue feel. It’s compact, well-built, and while it’s totally usable on the road, it’s also steeped in motorsport pedigree.

What I love most is how understated it is. Unlike newer GT3s with shoutier styling, the 997 GT3 hides its race-ready DNA in a shell that doesn’t look too different from a regular Carrera with an Aerokit. Underneath, though, it’s a different beast.

The heavy clutch, notchy shifter, and beautifully weighted steering all come together to create a raw, connected driving experience. I’ve had it for almost eight years now and despite having access to some truly special cars at work, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

Working in automotive PR definitely helped shape my perspective. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the stories behind cars. The 911 is the ultimate example of this—a car engineered “wrong” with the engine out back, but refined over generations into something truly iconic. The GT3 is the purest expression of that legacy.

Do you sometimes wish you were driving something different?

Only when I’m crawling through city traffic. That clutch can be a leg-day workout.

Ownership & Modifications

What have you done to your car so far?

Most of the mods have been focused on handling. I’ve upgraded to Ohlins R&T coilovers, fitted a full set of RSS arms, and swapped to wider OEM-look GT2 wheels. I also added Recaros and a half-cage to give it more of a Clubsport vibe.

After a mishap involving a loose handbrake in 2023 that left a dent on the rear fender, I decided to repaint the car in Fayence Yellow—a legendary colour from the Carrera GT.

What’s one feature that makes your car feel truly yours?

The stance. I’ve set it up just right. The GT2 wheels look almost identical to the GT3 stock wheels, but the rears have more offset and width, giving the car a properly planted look. On the narrower-bodied GT3, it fills the arches perfectly and gives the whole car a mean, purposeful squat.

Industry Insights & Perspective

What’s one trend in the automotive world that excites you? One that annoys you?

It’s an exciting time in the industry—manufacturers are being pulled in all directions. Electrification is creating cleaner transport options, while autonomous driving and mobility-as-a-service could reshape how we interact with cars entirely. At the same time, there’s a renewed appreciation for emotional connection and character, especially in performance cars.

I’m especially curious about how sports cars will evolve. Some brands are exploring electric sports cars, trying to balance emotion and sustainability. I’m really interested to see where that goes.

One thing that annoys me? Cars that rely entirely on digital interfaces for everything. Do I really need to swipe a screen just to adjust the aircon? Let’s keep some proper buttons on the dash.

Do you think car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller group, or is passion evolving in new ways?

Sadly, I do think it’s shrinking. In the ‘90s and early 2000s, there was a golden age of attainable performance cars—Evos, WRXs, hot hatches. Cars that made you fall in love with driving.

Today’s landscape is different. There’s less of that accessible magic for young enthusiasts. That said, resto-modding is more popular than ever, and we still get the occasional gem like the GR Yaris or Nissan 400Z.

Future & Dream Cars

What’s your realistic ideal next car?

Something practical and fast-ish—a sensible family wagon with a twist. I’m oddly obsessed with the 330i Touring. It’s good-looking, has room for the family and dog, and with a chip tune, it packs 300 horsepower. Fast, fun, and functional.

If you could own any car, what would it be?

Tough call! But here’s my dream five-car garage:

• Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 – the final evolution of my current car
• Porsche 964 Carrera RS – old-school perfection
• Ferrari 288 GTO – my poster car growing up
• W204 C63 AMG Wagon – for the wife and the tyre smoke
• NA2 Honda NSX-R – the ultimate JDM hero

Some people fall into the car industry by chance, others steer themselves into it with purpose. In this next feature from our enthusiast series, we meet someone who knew from the start that he wanted to build a career around his passion for wheels.

Meet Jay, a self-professed car nut who’s turned his lifelong passion into a successful career, now driving strategy and product for Motul in Singapore and the region. He’s also the proud owner of a Honda S2000, a car he’s held onto for 13 years (and counting) with no regrets.

From double wishbone suspension to hydraulic steering and just the right amount of purposeful mods, his S2000 is the embodiment of everything he loves about driving. While he has seen the industry evolve, from Kaizen principles to Euro-style marketing, and even e-fuels, one thing has remained constant: his appreciation for cars that are engineered to be driven, not just admired.

Personal Car History & Passion

What are some previous cars you’ve owned that you still miss?

I miss the Evo 9 terribly—well, only on some days! It could be insufferable at times, especially with that horrible turning radius. But I guess those quirks are what made the Evo feel special.

Another car I fondly remember is the BMW 116i F20 that I had three years ago. My wife and I took it on a road trip to Krabi, Thailand. It’s the experience with the car that really sticks with you.

How did you get into the car industry? Was it always the plan, or did passion turn into profession?

I’ve always had a passion for anything on wheels—mountain bikes, motorbikes, and of course, cars. From early on, I knew I wanted to build a career in the automotive industry.

That opportunity came with a role in Regional Product Planning at MotorImage Subaru. It was a valuable learning experience, during which I built meaningful relationships and gained key insights across the region. Many of the friends I made then are still in touch with me today.

Eventually, I joined a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, where I worked on regional projects for Toyota and Lexus in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and beyond. It broadened my perspective of the global automotive landscape.

Later, I moved to Motul, where I began my career in motorsports and marketing before transitioning into product management. It was a steep learning curve, especially coming from the structured, Kaizen-driven world of Japanese business to a more European-style workflow. But that challenge helped me grow.

Now, I lead a team that drives Motul’s business in Singapore, while also managing regional sponsorships and product strategies. We work closely with our customers—they’re the real bosses.

Ultimately, the industry operates on numbers and data. Passion is what gets you started, but business sense is what keeps it going. Speak the business language first—eventually, it’ll fuel the passion.

Choosing the Current Ride

Why did you choose your current car? Did your job influence your choice in any way?

I’ve owned my Honda S2000 for 13 years now. I bought it purely out of love—because I believed it would be a timeless classic, and it truly is. To this day, it still feels as fresh and exciting as ever.

It’s the perfect package: front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive, double wishbone suspension front and rear, hydraulic steering, a clean dashboard, and two doors. It’s got all the ingredients of a true sports car.

Of course, my job helps cover the expenses and upkeep of the car. And I’m grateful for that!

Do you sometimes wish you were driving something different?

Honestly, not really. There were a couple of moments where I almost sold it—once for a 987 Cayman R, and another time for a base F87 M2. Thankfully, those deals fell through. Especially the M2—I don’t think that car aged well, and there are just too many versions of it.

If I ever did sell the S2000, it would still be for something in the Porsche family: a 987 Cayman R, 981 Cayman S, or a 997 C2S, GTS, or GT3.

Ownership & Modifications

What have you done to your car so far?

From day one, I wanted the car to retain a stock-ish Type S look. I’m not a fan of heavily modified cars. I do take it out for the occasional track day, so I’ve made some light, purposeful upgrades for handling and reliability:

AP Racing brakes

TC105 wheels with 255/40/17 Bridgestone RE71-RS tyres

JRZ RS-Pro suspension

What’s one feature that makes your car feel truly yours?

There are three, actually: front-mid engine layout, rear-wheel drive, and double wishbone suspension at all four corners. It’s the trifecta of driving joy.

Industry Insights & Perspective

What’s one trend in the automotive world that excites you? One that annoys you?

I love how performance cars are becoming increasingly accessible today. They’re now more drivable, reliable, practical, and comfortable, without sacrificing power or handling. Electronics have made things better, not worse.

Take my daily driver, for example: the Golf GTI Mk7. It’s got the perfect balance of everything and could probably outpace my S2000 on a track day.

On a larger scale, the automotive industry is undergoing a massive shift. What’s the future of fuel? e-fuels, hydrogen, EVs? Motorsport teams are already testing e-fuels in some races. It’s an exciting time, but nothing is certain. Carmakers are rethinking their supply and value chains. Agility and foresight will be key moving forward.

Do you think car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller group, or is passion evolving in new ways?

Maybe. But it is what it is, I mean, stamp collecting used to be a big thing, too!

Future & Dream Cars

What’s your realistic ideal next car?

As I mentioned earlier, I’d consider a Porsche 911 (997 C2S), a Porsche 987 Cayman R, or a Porsche 981 Cayman S.

If you could own any car, what would it be?

Definitely the Porsche 911 (997 GT3).

From his early days of learning to drift in a Nissan 200SX to founding a car business driven purely by passion, each car he has owned and modified tells its story. In this third feature of the series, we chat with Harold about his journey through car ownership, industry insights, and the ongoing pursuit of automotive dreams.

Personal Car History & Passion

What are some previous cars you’ve owned that you still miss?

My first car was a Nissan 200SX (RS13). My second was another 200SX (S14), which you see here. My third is a GR Supra, which I also currently own.

I wouldn’t say I miss the RS13 exactly, but I had a great time with it as I learned drifting in that car. The excitement of owning my first dream car is an unmatched feeling.

How did you get into the car industry? Was it always the plan, or did passion turn into profession?

It was definitely not planned. I studied Design and started my career in exhibition design before moving into interior design.

My passion for motorsports and cars significantly influenced my entry into the car industry. Since my first car, I’ve been active in motorsport events and car gatherings, sharing and learning about cars and motorsport.

When my partner and I started Axle Motors, we had no experience in the automotive trade. We learned through running the business, supported by many friends. It turned out to be a blessing that we had built our foundational knowledge of cars and motorsport beforehand.

Choosing the Current Ride

Why did you choose your current car? Did your job influence your choice in any way?

My choice was heavily influenced by my early interest in drifting, sparked by Option magazines and D1GP competitions. I was also deeply involved in RC drifting during my younger days, especially during my army years, which taught me much about car setups and dynamics.

Because of these experiences, I knew I wanted a rear-wheel-drive car, and the Silvia was an iconic drift choice. Initially, I couldn’t afford the S14, so I settled for an RS13 instead. After a year, I sold the RS13 and, thankfully, the identical S14 I’d first viewed was still available. It just felt like it was meant to be.

Do you sometimes wish you were driving something different?

Just as women might enjoy owning multiple shoes or bags, car enthusiasts dream of owning different cars for various purposes—drifting, track days, daily driving, or even a supercar. Unfortunately, the high car prices in Singapore make this difficult.

That said, the S14 is incredibly versatile. It serves as my daily driver, gymkhana car, drift car, and track car at Sepang, which is why I love it so much.

Ownership & Modifications

What have you done to your car so far?

My modifications for the S14 are very objective. They aim at everyday practicality, motorsport activities like gymkhana, drifting, track events, and compliance with local regulations. My goal isn’t high horsepower but balanced, practical power.

My best modification was changing the final drive ratio from the original 3.6 to 4.3, significantly enhancing responsiveness. I fully utilize fifth gear at 7,000 RPM on the Sepang straights with this setup.

What’s one feature you love about the car, or that makes your car feel truly yours?

The S14 tends to be overshadowed by the S13 and S15, but its understated design grew on me immediately. I prefer subtle, simple aesthetics, and the straight-line, mild look of the S14 is precisely what appeals to me. Additionally, with only about nine units in Singapore, it feels uniquely mine.

Industry Insights & Perspective

What’s one trend in the automotive world that excites you? One that annoys you?

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing cars excite me because they’re still committed to making genuine driver-focused sports cars. Despite being faster, modern vehicles are also heavier and less connected to the driving experience.

I’m not enthusiastic about electric vehicles, but I’ll leave it at that!

Do you think car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller group, or is passion evolving in new ways?

Due to work and family commitments, I’ve stepped back from social gatherings and now focus more on gymkhana competitions and promoting motorsports. While I’d like to engage more with the new generation of enthusiasts, time is limited.

It’s tougher for enthusiasts today, particularly in Singapore, with rising car prices, stricter modification laws, and increased road surveillance. I encourage enthusiasts to channel their passion into motorsport events like gymkhana and track days at Sepang.

Future & Dream Cars

What’s your realistic ideal next car?

I’m older now and already own two cars I adore—the Silvia S14 (12 years of ownership) and the GR Supra (2 years). Nowadays, I rarely drive them outside motorsport events.

My next realistic goal would be a BMW M3 Touring, but given the hefty price tag, a BMW 330i Touring would be a more practical alternative. It would be perfect for family duties and racing at Sepang.

If you could own any car, what would it be?

Definitely the Koenigsegg Gemera. I love the four-seater supercar concept, which allows more people to share the supercar experience. I’m also fond of hybrid technology paired with small engines, although Koenigsegg has since scrapped the original three-cylinder concept.

On a more practical note, the GR86 suits everything I’ve loved about cars since I was young—front-engine, rear-wheel drive, manual. I’d probably use it for motorsports rather than regular driving.

I’m excited to see future GR cars and hope the next 86 returns to an inline-four NA engine, reminiscent of the legendary AE86.

In this second feature, a series in which we explore the stories of enthusiasts who turned their love for cars into a career, we focus on Kenneth Yeo and his trusty 1967 Volkswagen Beetle.

A die-hard air-cooled VW fan, Kenneth has spent decades lovingly restoring and fine-tuning his Bug, keeping it as period-correct as possible while ensuring it’s still a joy to drive. His deep connection with the car and his contributions to the Singapore Aircooled VW Enthusiasts (S.A.V.E.) community show how strong his love for classic Volkswagens runs.

With a history in karting operations and workshop management, Kenneth is currently the Operations Manager at AutoApp, a car servicing concierge outfit. That means he spends his time making sure car owners can maintain and repair their rides without the usual headaches—because let’s face it, car troubles are way more fun when they’re about restoration projects, not breakdowns!

Personal Car History & Passion

What are some previous cars you’ve owned that you still miss?

I’ve had a Bug since my first car in Singapore. This would be my fourth, the one that has been with me the longest. Every previous Bug had its unique character that I miss.

How did you get into the car industry? Was it always the plan, or did passion turn into profession?

It all started with learning and experimenting with self-maintenance. That led to helping friends, which eventually evolved into a full-time job coordinating repairs.

Choosing the Current Ride

Why did you choose your current car? Did your job influence your choice in any way?

I studied abroad, upon my return to Singapore, I was looking for an interesting and affordable car—this was before I entered the industry. The Bug caught my eye for its historical significance, reputation for reliability, and, of course, its anything but boring nature.

Do you sometimes wish you were driving something different?

If I did, it’d be another air-cooled model of the Stuttgart variety.

What have you done to your car so far?

Over the last 25 years, I’ve restored it twice, bringing it closer to factory stock and period correctness. It’s an ongoing (and possibly never-ending) process.

What’s one feature you love about the car, or that makes your car feel truly yours?

This ’67 model has quite a few rare, one-year-only parts that I had to hunt down and replace. I’ve also personally disassembled and repaired many components over the years, so it feels like I’ve restored almost every part of the car.

Industry Insights & Perspective

What’s one trend in the automotive world that excites you? One that annoys you?

I appreciate the constant development and technical advancements in efficiency, such as hybrids and EVs. But the downside is that modern cars aren’t built to last like they used to be.

Do you think car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller group, or is passion evolving in new ways?

I believe car enthusiast groups are growing in both number and size. A club I started—Singapore Aircooled VW Enthusiasts (S.A.V.E.)—began as a group of friends about 15 years ago. It grew into mailing lists, then Facebook and WhatsApp groups, and continues to thrive today. Our membership stands at around 1,900, including friends from the region. Even owners who have sold their cars stay involved to keep in touch with the community.

Future & Dream Cars

What’s your realistic ideal next car?

I don’t have concrete plans for my next car, as I’d always lean towards another air-cooled VW. However, if circumstances change (ahem! lower COE?), I might consider a hybrid or EV.

Kicking things off is Nigel Yong, Public Relations Manager at HMGICS (Hyundai) and his clean MINI Cooper S. A car guy through and through, Nigel’s obsession with hot hatches has shaped his garage, and his journey from automotive journalist to PR professional proves that when passion meets opportunity, great things happen.

Interestingly, he admits that reading Burnpavement.com articles over the years has influenced his car choices. Well, Nigel, we’ve got some Porsche reviews coming up—perhaps we can help manifest those into reality for you one day.

Personal Car History & Passion

What are some previous cars you’ve owned that you still miss?

I’ve only ever owned hatchbacks, and there are two I wish I could keep forever: my ZC31S Suzuki Swift Sport and my three-door Mk6 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Swift Sport was a fuss-free, fun little car that took everything I threw at it without complaint. The GTI, on the other hand, was a bucket-list car. I’ve always been drawn to hatchbacks, and the GTI is one of the most iconic hot hatches.

How did you get into the car industry? Was it always the plan, or did passion turn into profession?

You could say it was always the plan. I’ve loved cars for as long as I can remember. While pursuing my communications degree, I reached out to Brendan Mok through a mutual friend. Brendan—now Porsche APAC’s Head of PR—used to run a modified car magazine called AFTMKT. I introduced myself and offered my writing services at a very affordable rate (laughs). That led to a part-time gig with Brendan before I moved on to Sgcarmart in 2015. After my stint as a writer, I crossed over into brand PR. So yeah, it was a plan that worked out—combining passion with profession.

Choosing the Current Ride

Why did you choose your current car? Did your job influence your choice in any way?

I’ve always loved the MINI—whether it was Mr Bean’s quirky companion or the perfect getaway car in The Italian Job. I’ve always been drawn to compact, lightweight, three-door cars that are fun to drive, so the MINI was a natural choice. I originally wanted an older R53, but I couldn’t find one in good enough condition.

In some ways, my job pushed me towards this older-gen MINI. With everything going electric and packed with driving aids and alerts, I wanted something raw and back to basics—and that’s precisely what this MINI is. In my opinion, it’s the last genuinely raw MINI, before the F-series became too refined, less cheeky, and, well… a lot fatter.

If you weren’t in the industry, would you be driving something different?

I don’t think so. I’d still be driving hot hatches, no matter what. But if I had ended up in tech, finance, or pharma instead of the automotive industry, maybe I’d be in a BMW M or a RUF instead (laughs).

Ownership & Modifications

What have you done to your car so far?

Quite a bit, even if it’s not immediately apparent. This MINI was more of a resto-mod project than a hardcore track build—I wanted to keep it as original-looking as possible (or OEM+) while refreshing it mechanically.

I refreshed the engine, overhauled the transmission, and replaced the entire cooling system—hoses, radiator, intercooler, the works. I also swapped out the bushings, bearings, wheels, brakes, and tyres, and even replaced small interior details like the shift knob, steering wheel buttons, and floor mats.

On the outside, it got a fresh coat of paint, new trims, Camden edition wing mirror caps, and a front lip from the R59 variant—an OEM+ touch suggested by Peter from Espace to give the front end a lower, more aggressive look.

There was more work involved, but that’s what I can recall off the top of my head. Thanks to Peter from Espace and Edward from Cartisan for helping me rebuild the car over the past year and a half. I can be quite OCD with my requirements (grins).

What’s one modification or feature that makes your car feel truly yours?

Funnily enough, it’s more about the unmodification of the car. Most R-series MINIs go for an aggressive look with blacked-out chrome, emblems, dark tints, etc. Mine had that treatment when I got it, but I reversed all of it—restoring the chrome trims and swapping out the dark factory tints for clear ones.

Then there are the BBS CS-4 wheels, refinished in Porsche silver. They’re similar to the original R56 JCW wheels, so they keep the OEM look. Plus, I’ve always been a fan of BBS. A friend once told me that these little details and the overall aesthetic make my car easily recognisable on the road.

Industry Insights & Perspective

What’s one trend in the automotive world that excites you? One that annoys you?

I love the resurgence of retro-inspired designs—cars like the Hyundai IONIQ models, Volkswagen ID. Buzz, Suzuki Jimny, and the new Renault 5 bring back character. With everything going electric and software-driven, there’s less distinction between brands, so design is becoming the key differentiator for emotional appeal.

What annoys me? How cars are turning into giant smartphones loaded with unnecessary gimmicks. I’m old-school—I believe in quality engineering, suitable materials, and solid driving dynamics. That’s what should matter.

Do you think car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller group, or is passion evolving in new ways?

Car enthusiasts are still very much around, but the definition has changed. There are tons of EV enthusiasts who geek out over the tech and everything. It’s kind of like watches—you have one camp that believes a smartwatch is all you ever need… and the correct camp that appreciates the mechanical beauty of traditional timepieces.

Future & Dream Cars

What’s your ideal next car—realistically and dream-wise?

I’d like to keep this MINI for as long as possible. But if I had to replace it, I would probably get a Suzuki Jimny or an MX-5. Dream-wise, I would get an Alpina, a RUF, or a 996 GT3.

Truth be told, I wasn’t looking or even thinking of a Subaru Impreza WRX despite it being a childhood dream to own one (all thanks to the late Colin McRae). When the time came for me to change to a more practical car, right on top of my list was the Subaru Forester; I had this idea that if I had to change cars, it’s either I ‘go big or go home’. Why go from Tall to Grande, when I could go straight all the way to Venti?

If there was one car that defined Subaru, it is the Impreza WRX. With three World Rally Championship constructors' titles, the first generation Impreza is the definitive groundbreaker. It evokes memories of rally heros like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz and Richard Burns blasting their yellow-and-blue Impreza 555's inches from rally fans. More than that, it was the car that made high performance motoring easily accessible to everyone. And since then, characteristic Boxer beat never fails to grab our attention.

When the Lancer EX arrived on our shores, we all thought it was a good-looking car. And as expected, it was indeed a hit with the local car buyers but what about enthusiasts?

The EX is the biggest Lancer to date. In Singapore, we're offered a rather weedy 1.5-litre variant, this beefier 2.0-litre as well as the Lancer EX Ralliart which had a turbo and four wheel drive. Oh, don't get us started with the mental Evolution X…

Let's stay on earth and focus on the practical models. While we weren't entirely impressed by the smallest engine option, the 2.0-litre option felt like a good all-rounder package when we first took it for a drive two years back.

The Chevrolet Chevette was quite a sale success, but it was fighting a loosing battle with the “revolutionary” front wheel drive cars such as the Honda Civic. It was underpowered too, with a choice of 53 hp or 70 hp. GM made these cars from 1973 to 1993, in 2- and 4-door sedans, 3-door hatches and 2-door wagons.
